Margibi County – Police on Monday fired tear fuel to disperse lots of of jubilant supporters of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) who had thronged the Roberts Worldwide Airport (RIA) to welcome former President George Manneh Weah again to Liberia.

By J.H. Webster Clayeh, [email protected]

Eyewitnesses mentioned CDC partisans assembled early on the airport, chanting slogans, singing, and dancing in anticipation of their chief’s return. The scene, initially celebratory, descended into chaos when officers of the Liberia Nationwide Police (LNP) tried to clear the gang from the airport entrance.

In response to witnesses, partisans resisted orders to vacate the premises, prompting officers to launch tear fuel canisters.

“There was no violence. We had been simply singing and ready for our President Weah,” one supporter informed FrontPage Africa. “Then the police got here and began throwing tear fuel. Folks ran in every single place. Some received damage.”

A number of people sustained minor accidents as they scrambled to flee the choking fumes, with some resorting to conventional cures like leaves and water to ease the results.

As of press time, the LNP had but to launch an official assertion on the incident.

Weah’s return comes at a politically charged second, weeks after the demolition of his celebration’s headquarters in Congo City. His arrival is predicted to reenergize the CDC’s base and poses a recent check for the federal government’s dealing with of civil liberties and public order.

This can be a creating story…
