    Liberia: Government, World Bank Break Ground for Landmark Renewable Energy Project in Lofa County

    Voinjama – The Authorities of Liberia, by the Rural and Renewable Power Company (RREA), immediately held a grand groundbreaking ceremony for the development of a 4.0 MWp photo voltaic photovoltaic (PV) energy plant with a 9.4 MWh lithium-ion battery power storage system (BESS) in Voinjama, Lofa County.

    In line with the RREA, the initiative, financed by the World Financial institution below the Liberia Renewable Power Entry Challenge (LIRENAP) marks a serious milestone in Liberia’s ongoing efforts to broaden entry to wash, dependable, and inexpensive electrical energy.

    The high-profile occasion introduced collectively senior authorities officers, improvement companions, county authorities, and group representatives, highlighting robust collaboration towards rural electrification and sustainable power improvement.

    Among the many dignitaries in attendance have been the Minister of Inner Affairs,Hon Francis S. Nyumalin, Sr.,  Deputy Minister of Mines and Power, Hon. Charles Umehai; Mr. Claude J. Katta, Chairman, Board  of Commissioners, Liberia Electrical energy Regulatory Fee, the Government Director of RREA, Mr. Samuel Bocay Nagbe; the World Financial institution Activity Workforce Lead for Liberia, Madam Tabuah Ankoh; members of the Lofa County Legislative Caucus; the Superintendent of Lofa County; and representatives from native communities and civil society organizations.

    As soon as accomplished, the challenge, built-in with an current 1.8 MW diesel energy plant to type a hybrid mini-grid, will present trendy, dependable, and sustainable electrical energy to over 50 thousand residents and companies in load facilities of Voinjama, Foya, Kolahun, Massambolahun, Bolahun, and 25 communities between the above-mentioned load facilities.

    Talking on the ceremony, Hon. Charles Umehai, Deputy Minister of Mines and Power, described the challenge as a “turning level in Liberia’s power transformation agenda,” emphasizing that entry to wash power is important for nationwide progress and rural empowerment.

    Mr. Samuel Bocay Nagbe, Government Director of RREA, expressed appreciation to the World Financial institution and the Authorities of Liberia for his or her continued partnership and help.

    This groundbreaking demonstrates our unwavering dedication to bringing trendy power to all components of Liberia,” Mr. Nagbe mentioned. “This challenge will gentle up properties, energy small companies, and create new alternatives for the individuals of Lofa County.”

    In her remarks, Madam Tabuah Ankoh, World Financial institution Activity Workforce Lead, reaffirmed the Financial institution’s robust help for Liberia’s renewable power initiatives.

He reassured residents of presidency’s continued efforts in making the nation accessible by highway development and elevated entry to electrical energy. 

    The Lofa Photo voltaic Hybrid Energy Challenge stands as a cornerstone of Liberia’s broader power entry technique, aiming to scale back dependence on diesel technology, minimize carbon emissions, and foster financial progress by renewable power investments.

    The challenge might be accomplished in June 2026 at a value of over US$10.67M.
