Monrovia, Liberia; June 20, 2025 – In response to the Middle for Justice and Accountability, an estimated 250,000 individuals misplaced their lives throughout Liberia’s civil battle from 1989 to 2003.

In a bid to advertise closure, therapeutic, peacebuilding, and reconciliation, the Impartial Nationwide Fee on Human Rights (INCHR), with help from the United Nations Improvement Programme (UNDP), has constructed 9 memorials at bloodbath and mass grave websites throughout the nation.

5 of those memorials are in Grand Bassa, Rivercess, Lofa, Gbarpolu, and Bong counties. They’re meant to humanize and honor those that perished below harrowing situations or had been buried in improvised graves in the course of the battle.

This initiative aligns with Advice 17.0 of the Reality and Reconciliation Fee (TRC), which requires reparations and memorialization.

To foster neighborhood possession and encourage use of the websites in ways in which help the objectives of the TRC’s Memorialization Program, the memorials might be formally handed over to their respective communities this June.

The presence of those memorials is anticipated to supply solace and therapeutic to households of civil battle victims. Their formal dedication offers a significant alternative for communities to recollect misplaced family members and search closure.

These areas serve not solely as websites of remembrance but in addition as symbols of the nation’s collective rejection of violence as a method of resolving battle.

Moreover, the memorials might promote native tourism, attracting guests and bringing financial and cultural advantages to the encircling areas.

The premier dedication ceremony, marking the official handover of the memorials to native communities, will happen on the seventeenth of June 2025 in Behn City, Grand Bassa County.

This historic event was  attended by the INCHR Chairperson and Commissioners, dignitaries from the European Union and the Swedish Embassy, in addition to neighborhood and non secular leaders, representatives of civil society organizations, girls and youth leaders, native officers, and members of the Memorial Committee.

Subsequent ceremonies might be held in Bloe City (Rivercess County), Bopolu Metropolis (Gbarpolu County), Kpotomai City (Lofa County), and Gbonyea (Bong County). Enhancing by Jonathan Browne
