    Liberia: Removed Sapo Occupants Praise Security Forces

    CHEBIOH TOWN, Sinoe County – When Andrew Saye discovered that safety forces needed him out of the Sapo National Park, he grew nervous. He was in for an enormous shock.

    Established in 1983, Sapo Nationwide Park is Liberia’s first and largest reserve, spanning over 180,000 hectares throughout Grand Gedeh, River Gee, and Sinoe Counties. It’s a international biodiversity hotspot, sheltering 125 mammal species and 590 chicken species, together with a number of endangered species.

    Nonetheless, it faces threats from unlawful logging, farming, and mining, based on a 2012 report.

    Final month, a joint safety crew expelled the occupants from “Camp America,” one among 13 identified settlements within the park.  “Operation Restore Hope IV” safeguards the park and combats unlawful migration within the southeast. It additionally addresses monetary and wildlife crimes, in addition to human and drug trafficking.  

    After their deployment, the safety crew held mass conferences with group members and despatched messages to camp masters, giving them a two-week ultimatum to vacate the park. Then they arrange bases in Korjahyee, John Wolo Village, and Nyennawliken in Sinoe, Grand Gedeh, and River Gee, respectively.

    “We’re working cooperatively and eradicating them from the park,” John Smith, Sapo’s Chief Park Warden. The transfer was meant to enhance relations between adjoining communities and safety forces, added Smith.
